World’s top mayor says team is key

Her housekeeper, Grace Voyiya, doubles as a wardrobe consultant, while hair stylist Steven Phillips services her locks around the clock.

Steven and Helen Zille

Phillips has risen at the crack of dawn to blow-dry Zille’s hair more or less ever since she inherited the mayoral chain two years ago.

The veteran hairstylist vowed that he would get up at any hour for Zille, saying she need just ask.  "Helen normally comes to my house between 4am and 6am...sometimes up to twice a week," said Phillips. “She’s just such a fabulous person, how could I say no ?”

Hair-raising opening

Mayor Helen Zille officially cut the ribbon at the opening of Absolut Hair, a Claremont hair salon, on Friday 6 Feb.

Helen Zille officially opens the Claremont Salon

According to Ryan Smith, who co-owns Absolut Hair with Steven Phillips, Zille went straight to the opening of the salon from the opening of parliament earlier that day.

Says Smith: ‘Helen has been a part of the Absolut family for two years and relies on Steven for her new look, styling, cutting and colour.”  He adds that Phillips does Zille’s hair at all hours – even, when necessary, in the early hours of the morning.  The salon is the second to be opened by Phillips; his other salon has been operating in Vredehoek for the past eight years.  Phillips has been a qualified stylist for the past 23 years and has been awarded several certificates and distinctions in hair styling.

Volume Tip

Volume Tip, You magazine

“Go for a Wella Headlines volumising treatment more or less every six weeks,” says Steven Phillips, owner and stylist at Absolut Hair, Cape Town.  “This treatment works almost like a perm but without the curls.  Your hair will return to its natural texture after six to eight weeks.”

For mature women

Mature Hair tip, You Magazine

“The best way to cover grey is with a combination of lowlights and highlights woven throughout your hair.

For mature women a soft, textured fringe is a must.”

Change your hair, change your look

Fair Lady article

“Soft, shattered edges, especially on short bobs, are very trendy.  The look is shifting from ‘sexy and playful’ to ‘mystical and mysterious’.
